Top 10 Comfort Formulas (March 2021) – Reviews and Buyer’s Guide

When I first got my beautiful baby girl on my arms, it was the best feeling in the world. As a new Mom, I was terrified but I was also determined to give my daughter everything that she needs to keep up her dazzling smile. Her smile did not last long. Sleepless nights, painful screams and after consultations with various pediatricians, I finally stumbled upon a comfort formula.

After running from one doctor to the next with my infant daughter’s stomach pain, I found out what comfort formula really is. It is a specialized formulation of milk containing less lactose. Since infant digestive systems are not mature enough to digest lactose, comfort formula helps to put less stress on the infant’s digestive system, resulting in lower colic pain and constipation issues. Often new mothers cannot distinguish colic pain from pain that results from trapped air in stomach. Usually, after an infant is done breastfeeding, some air bubbles may get trapped inside the belly. This could cause the infant to feel nauseous and start vomiting, and also feel pain and gassiness. These babies may also have difficulty in forming soft comfortable stools and get constipated. Colic pain occurs at night very often. You’ll see your infant squirming and being fussy.

Nowadays comfort formula ingredients not just reduce the pain, but also help boost the immune system, reduce gas in the tummy, lower fussiness and improve cognitive abilities. Because of colic pain, infants miss out on regular breastfeeding and do not get enough breast milk as they should. This is why most parents look for comfort formula that contains ingredients as similar to breast milk as possible. Comfort formula also needs to be gentle, easy to digest and not cause adverse effects on the infant’s body. Finding the perfect formula for your infant is an extra struggle that I can completely relate to. Eventually, you’ll start to believe that no comfort formula is right for your baby.

If you are facing the same struggle as I did with my baby, then let me assure you that you will get past through this. My team and I have spent hours consulting various pediatricians. Based on their opinions, my personal experience and other user reviews, we were able to determine a list of the best comfort formula products for you. With this list, consider all your infant troubles gone!

Why Should You Trust Us?

When I was frantically chasing doctors around for my baby’s conditions, I never stopped to read the labels of the comfort formula that she was being prescribed. I was just a desperate mom trying to find an answer to her problems. But once the whole thing blew over, and my kid started running around the house making a mess of the solid food she was being given, I finally settled down to reflect upon my experiences. I thought of how other moms may have been dealing with the same issues as I did with my daughter. And then, I made a decision: infant formula is just a supplement for breast milk, so, we needed to do more research about them.

Since then, we have been conducting extensive research on this product for the 3 whole months, taking feedbacks from different mothers from our control group, trying out different products. So, believe me when I say that we have experience. We can assure you that our research is methodical and done with utmost sincerity. We drew conclusions after approximately 48 hours of research. We looked at over 30 different brands and shortlisted 14 products which we found to be the best of the best. We remained unbiased throughout our research and selected only those products which have actually reduced tummy pain, spit-ups, fussiness and gas problems in babies aged 0 to 12 months.

I am sure by now you must have read a lot of online reviews, but not one of them felt right. I have been there too. I personally felt that these reviews have been written by people who have not faced the problems I did, or are not parents themselves. With that being said, I do understand where your trust issues are coming from. This is why my team and I have taken the initiative to only share the right information with you and all other parents.

Why Babies Need Comfort Formula

Comfort formula is exactly as it sounds like. It has been developed for babies to feel comfortable, from painful sessions of colic pain, gassiness, spit-ups and hours of crying. It has the right mix of vitamins and nutrients for babies to have a healthy growth and steady development. Ingredients include galacto-oligosaccharides and fructo-oligosaccharides which are very easy to digest and provides energy, reduced levels of lactose which ensures a reduction in gastrointestinal pain, and partially hydrolyzed whey protein which can also be easily digested.

Comfort formula products are usually taken when babies suffer from colic pain and gas problems. The cause of colic is unknown but it is incredibly frustrating for both parents and babies. Symptoms of colic pain include repeated and inconsolable crying and bloated stomach. There is no exact easy-fit solution for colic pain. Comfort formula is only meant to reduce and manage the pain, but it is not a treatment. With increasing age, however, colic pain does stop eventually. These products are also known to reduce constipation in babies, which will allow the baby to develop a healthy appetite and gain energy. Other nutrients may be present for the stimulation of a healthy gut, immune system, reduction of allergic reactions, etc.

Babies could vomit after ingesting comfort formula milk as the initial smell is unpleasant. Keep in mind that comfort formula is not an alternative to breast milk, so although its composition can simulate breast milk, it will still not be enough for the baby’s proper development. This is why keeping an eye on the baby’s diet is crucial.

Causes, Signs & Remedies:

Babies have primitive forms of digestive systems that usually cannot tolerate lactose. The reason is the absence or reduced levels of the enzyme lactase. Without lactase, lactose ends up getting used by gut bacteria, which results in the production of gas. There are four types of lactose intolerance.
Primary lactose intolerance is the most widely observed type and can go on throughout adulthood. The causes are hereditary and vary by ethnicity. Congenital lactose intolerance is a rare genetic disorder in which no lactase is produced. Secondary lactose intolerance happens because of injury. Lastly, developmental lactose intolerance occurs in babies who are born prematurely. Although this type does not last long, this type is what causes colic pain in babies. Comfort formula helps to manage the pain and also keep the baby healthy. However, before you buy any product, you should consult your pediatrician and definitely discuss changes in the diet for your baby. Here are some of the signs of colic pain that you should be aware of.

Fussiness and Gas

Gas is naturally produced as part of food digestion. Gas bubbles may also form when the baby swallows air while feeding. If the baby is not burping, it means air is trapped inside the digestive system. The air could cause discomfort, which will make the baby cry, pull legs towards the chest and the stomach will look bloated. So first you should try to get your baby to burp every five minutes during breastfeeding and bottle feeding. Change the position of the baby and try again until your baby burps. If you are sure that your baby does not have gas problems, ensure burping when switching breasts or burping after swallowing every 3 ounces of milk during bottle feeding.

To relieve the gas pain you can try other methods. Try to massage your baby’s tummy. If that does not help, then trying bouncing your baby gently on your lap. Some OTC drops containing simethicone are available, which could induce burping.

Constipation and Diarrhea:

If your baby is constipating, the stool will be dry and difficult to pass. Constipation occurs when colon of the large intestine absorbs too much water in the stool. If too little water is absorbed, your baby may be suffering from diarrhea. Diarrhea also gives you a clue to whether your baby has an infection or not. When your baby is through bowel movement, change the baby’s position every once in a while to help pass out stool. Keep your baby in a semi-reclining position if possible. If your baby is lying flat then let his or her feet braced against a surface. This could ease the bowel movement.

If diarrhea becomes very frequent and a lot of stool is produced every time, your baby is definitely in trouble. However, there are worse symptoms, for example, mucus or blood in stools, vomiting, fever, fussiness to eat, irritability and abnormally colored urine. If you see any of these symptoms, you should definitely call your pediatrician for help. Diarrhea may continue or get worse. You can try and switch baby formula and see if it helps. There are separate baby formula products available specifically for babies suffering from diarrhea, which contains nutrients required for managing the disease. These are available for both infants older than six months and toddlers.

Other Signs

Colic pain:
If you see your baby crying for a few hours, for at least half a week, and if this crying continues for the next three weeks, your baby may have colic pain. Colic usually lasts for around three months. Any pain after that would be of serious concern. As mentioned previously, there are no specific known causes of colic pain. It is also quite manageable, but facing your baby’s tantrums will get you frustrated. So you should have some patience. If your baby is crying excessively due to colic even after getting comfort formula, it could be because of sensitivity to any ingredient in the product. In such cases, it is wise to consult a pediatrician and try other formulas for colic babies. Alimentum formula helps to reduce colic pain immediately in 24 hours. If your pediatrician suggests you to feed alimentum formula, then you should try it.

Spit-up:
You’ll notice that while feeding your baby, he or she can spit out food in small amounts. This occurs due to the immature digestive tract muscles which try to push food out of the mouth painlessly. You do not need to be worried about it much, but since it is usually seen with colic pain, it could be a sign that your baby has colic.

Reflux and GERD
When stomach contents go up the esophagus and get out of the mouth it is called gastroesophageal reflux. This is not a problem, as it disappears with the maturation of baby’s digestive tract over time. However, gastroesophageal reflux disease (or GERD) could occur if the reflux happens very frequently. The stomach contents going up can irritate the upper digestive tract.

Vomit
Spit ups are generally harmless, but if they become forceful, painful and more in volume, it is considered vomiting. Babies feel uneasiness both before and after vomiting.

How We Picked and Tested

Comfort formula cannot treat colic and other gastrointestinal symptoms, but it does help to manage your baby’s crying and pain. It contains nutrients, prebiotics and healthy substances for the baby’s nourishment. Comfort formula is manufactured in a way that makes it easier to digest, particularly for lactose intolerant babies. Side effects are minimal as well. After thorough research on comfort formula, we were able to establish a list of 14 products which were compared side by side based on benefits and features. We not only scoured through the websites of each brand, but we also checked product guidebooks, descriptions and critic reviews to shortlist the products that we feel are best for all frustrated parents out there with colicky babies.

I can assure you that our research on comfort formula is both methodical and reliable, hence trustworthy. We determined our list of products based on more than 3500 consumer reviews of five different brands. We excluded any product that contains GMO content unapproved by the FDA. Final reviews given by our volunteers were matched and compared with research found from the user reviews and ratings. With all the information the Suplemania team had, we devised a shortlist of 10 different comfort formula products that we think will help you. Read on to know which comfort formula product suits you best!

Advantages & Disadvantages of Breastfeeding and Formula Feeding That You Should Be Aware Of

Before giving comfort formula to your baby, you should know the advantages and disadvantages of formula feeding and how it would affect the breastfeeding pattern you have developed for your baby. This will help you decide what to feed your newborn and when to feed. Most researchers and pediatricians agree that breast milk is the best and there is no alternative to it. This is because breast milk contains many substances that closely similar milk formula products do not have, for example, antibodies. Sometimes breastfeeding may not be desired by the mother. This is usually the case if the mother contains harmful substances in her body, for example, opioid drugs, or if she is undernourished. In this case, formula products may be the only way to get a baby to survive, but in general, breastfeeding is always recommended.

Newborn health

Breast milk has many advantages for both the mom and the baby. The most important one is that it delivers the mother’s antibodies to the child, thus passing on immunity to protect the baby from infections. Breastfed babies have fewer infections and remain healthier throughout life. It also contains the right amount of fatty acids, minerals, amino acids, vitamins and enzymes which are necessary for the survival and development of the baby during the first few years. Breast milk may not be viable only in the case of mothers under specific medications, treatments or if they have harmful diseases that may be passed to infants. Sometimes, mother’s breast milk may not contain the right amount of nutrients, so it is best to consult a pediatrician and understand what type of diet is best for you and your baby. In situations where both the diet of mother and baby are compromised, it is best to use formula feed. The only disadvantage here is that the baby will not receive a ‘personalized’ mixture of nutrients from the mother. Another trouble is that the baby could be allergic to certain formula ingredients.

Mother’s health

Breastfeeding is advantageous not only for the infant but also for the mother’s health. Lactating mothers have reduced the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, hip problems, and osteoporosis. Breastfeeding also helps the mother to get her shape back and reduce obesity. An hour of breastfeeding can burn around 500 calories! Thus mothers feeding formula to their babies may have increased risk of cancer and body posture problems. Lactation also acts as a birth control method during the period of infant nursing. However, lactation can also cause tiredness and fatigue, especially if the mother does not have enough support. It is also important to assess the mother’s diet to ensure comfort to the baby

Comfort formula products are designed in a way to suit infant digestive systems. However, for every baby, the situation can be different. Usually, a baby might never encounter any side effects. Some babies can have side effects and some may not. Some babies may be allergic to certain products while others may not.
Powdered formula products are not sterilized, so it is not suitable for babies with premature bodies and compromised immune systems. Consult with your baby’s pediatrician before giving any comfort formula. Ask the doctor to give you directions on how to use the formula, how to sterilize the cooking utensils and how to use bottles and nipples before use. Never use the microwave oven to warm the formula milk. This could damage the feeding bottle and also burn the milk.

The U.S FDA has not evaluated the use of dietary supplements, including comfort formula for the purposes of diagnosing, curing, treating or preventing any disease and health problems. These products are only meant to help achieve a better diet and manage nutrition.

Introduction about our Top Ten products list:

During our research on comfort formula, we selected 28 features from 14 different comfort formula products for analysis and evaluation. Thus, Similac total comfort is made in a way that closely resembles human breast milk, but it is not made from breast milk. A List Of Other Products We Tested

Glossary:

DHA: a type of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid, with the full form being docosahexaenoic acid. It acts as a key structural component in the development of brain, skin, cerebral cortex and retina in the eyes. It naturally occurs in breast milk but can be synthesized from alpha-linolenic acid found in plants, fish oil, and algae. DHA is required for the formation of phospholipids in brain cells and retina. Thus, DHA is abundant in the brain and neurons. In fact, half of the neuronal plasma membrane weight is DHA. Reduced levels of DHA have been associated with cognitive abnormalities, depression and neuronal cell death. DHA regulates the transport of important substances such as choline, taurine, glycine and also modulates the response of rhodopsin and potassium channels in the retina.

Lactose: Lactose is a disaccharide sugar molecule made from a combination of glucose and galactose. It tastes mildly sweet and is found mostly in milk. Lactose can be converted to lactulose via alkaline solution. Lactulose is specifically used for treating constipation.

Galactosemia: it is an inherited disorder where the individual cannot metabolize a simple sugar called galactose. This is usually because of the inherited deficiency in an enzyme responsible for the metabolism of galactose. Individuals with galactosemia can break down lactose to glucose and galactose, but since they cannot metabolize galactose, it builds up towards toxic levels. Too much galactose can cause liver and renal failure, vomiting, brain damage etc. Infants with galactosemia usually have only around 25% chance of survival.

2’FL oligosaccharide: it is the most abundant human milk oligosaccharide present in breast milk. It has the ability to provide immune support and prevent infections, by preventing pathogens and toxins to stick to epithelial surfaces inside the body. It also stimulates the growth of good bacteria such Bifidobacteria which also support in immune protection. This is prevalent among infant immune systems. 2’FL has been known to offer protection against major pathogenic bacteria such as C. jejuni and H. pylori.

Probiotic: this term is used to describe any bacteria or yeast that has been proven to be good or beneficial for the human body, especially the digestive system and its functions.

Whey proteins: After milk has curdled a type of liquid is formed. This liquid is called whey and it is full of important proteins such as immunoglobulins, beta lactoglobulin, alpha lactalbumin, serum albumin, peptones etc. These globular proteins make up 20% of cow milk.

Lactase: An enzyme used to digest lactose, by converting it to glucose and galactose. People deficient of lactase usually have lactose intolerance. The inability to digest lactose means the gut bacteria end up digesting lactase, which results in gas formation. This can cause both an infant and an adult to have gassiness and bloating.

Antibodies: type of immunoglobulin proteins secreted by plasma cells of the immune system which can help neutralize pathogenic bacteria and viruses.

Hypoallergenic: some products are labelled hypoallergenic because these contain ingredients that may not cause allergic reactions. Even if they do, the allergy intensity will be low.

Soy formula: these infant formulas are usually recommended for those babies who have galactosemia, lactase deficiency or allergies towards cow milk. It is based on the proteins of soybean instead of cow milk or breast milk. It is usually lactose free, so it is good for lactose intolerant babies, but usually soy formula has lower nutritional value and inhibits iron absorption. Soy formula may also contain genetically modified ingredients. Many users have reported allergies against soy formula.

GMO: a genetically modified organism is any organism whose genetic code has been altered and manipulated via genetic engineering techniques for desirable properties and products.

Lutein: Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoid found only from plants. In animals, lutein is found the retina, animal fats, and egg yolk.

B. lactis: also called Bifidobacterium animalis, this bacteria is a major probiotic found in many dairy products and also naturally found in the human gut.

Inositol: a sugar alcohol found usually in the brain and some other mammalian cells. It is half as sweet as table sugar. The kidneys produce 4.0 grams of inositol everyday. Other tissues also make inositol. It is a major component of cell signaling pathways such as insulin response, calcium ion concentration control, maintaining cell membrane potential, fats degeneration and cytoskeleton maintenance.

Palm olein oil: a type of monounsaturated fatty acid that forms liquid oil when derived from palm oil.

L. reuteri: some strains of Lactobacillus reuteri are used as probiotics. They help the immune system against dangerous pathogen such as certain yeast strains, Salmonella, E.coli, protozoa parasites, etc.

Wrapping It Up

Every parent wants a strong, healthy and beautiful baby in their arms. However, a comfortable baby is a happy baby. If your baby is not comfortable, if he or she is in pain or being fussy, you should be concerned. If your baby is crying too frequently and not feeding on breast milk properly, it could be because of an uncomfortable digestive system or an underlying disease. You should always consult a pediatrician before using or switching to any infant formula. Your pediatrician will tell you what diet is best for your baby’s health and yours.

In most cases, there is no better alternative to breast milk. Human milk gives personalized nutrition and immunity to the baby and also creates helps to create a loving bond between mother and child. If breast milk is not adequate enough, the mother should drink more water as this could stimulate milk production. However, if she is under medication or if she is undernourished, infant formula can be taken as a viable alternative. There are various kinds of infant formulas. The choice of using one depends on the needs of your child.

Mothers should be careful while preparing infant feed and giving the right amount of dosage to their children. Cleanliness of the containers and utensils used for feeding is of utmost importance. Make sure the feeding bottle is sterilized properly before use. Always discard if you were unable to feed your baby in one time.

Remember that although these products do follow strict guidelines from FDA during manufacture, these products do not claim to treat or cure constipation, gassiness or lactose intolerance. Rather, these products are meant to supplement the baby’s nutrition and dietary needs to manage uncomfortable conditions. You know what is best for your baby. Now that you know all about the best infant comfort formulas of 2019, you know to do next!
