Fatty Liver and Its Causes
Firstly, let’s have a look at Fatty Liver and what it is exactly. A fatty liver happens when there is too much of a buildup of fat in the liver cells. Of course, it is normal for people to have a little fat in the liver cells, your liver is considered to be fatty if there is more than 5% fat in the liver. Many people often presume that alcohol is responsible for a failed kidney as well as fatty liver. While this can be the case, it is not always the cause and it can be caused by many factors, particularly lifestyle.
There are many conditions where a fatty liver is present and these fall into the category called “Non-Alcoholic Liver Disease” or NAFLD. In Western countries, this is actually the most frequently found liver disease in both adults and children. The first stage of this disease is known as NAFL (non-alcoholic fatty liver) and, in its initial stages, it is reversible. However, it is not often diagnosed. Eventually, NAFL can turn into NASH, which stands for Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis. With NASH, there’s a greater accumulation of fat and also inflammation which causes damage to the cells in the liver. It can then cause scar tissue or fibrosis as the cells die off or become ‘injured’. This, in turn, can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and even cancer.
Fatty Liver Disease affects around a quarter of the world’s population, which is a staggering amount! It’s also connected with other diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, kidney diseases and heart disease. So, what causes it?
Rather obviously, obesity and a generally large amount of body fat can cause you to have a fatty liver. On average, between 30% and 90% of obese people suffer from fatty liver disease. Due to the current childhood obesity epidemic, this percentage is increasing in the younger population too.
Too much belly fat
People who are of normal weight may also develop a fatty liver. This is due to too much fat on the belly area. This is known as being “viscerally obese”.
People with metabolic syndrome or Type 2 Diabetes may have increased storage of fat in the liver due to their resistance to insulin.
Excess refined carbohydrates
The liver stores excess fat when there is a large amount of refined carbs being consumed. This is especially true in people who are overweight or those who are insulin-resistant.
Consumption of sugary drinks
Sodas and energy drinks that are high in fructose have been shown to increase the accumulation of fats in the liver in both children and adults.
Poor gut health
There has been some research recently that shows that having an imbalance of bacteria in the gut or problems with the gut barrier (such as ‘leaky gut’) can contribute to the development of fatty liver disease.
Anxiety and depression
Some sources have suggested that heightened periods of anxiety and depression can contribute to inflammation in the body, which in turn can contribute to NAFLD.
Symptoms of a Fatty liver and NAFLD
You may not have any symptoms of having a fatty liver, however, if you’re reading this article, it may be that you think or know that you have a fatty liver. Of course, not all people have the same symptoms and some people do not even know that they have a fatty liver. Many people’s FLD is found only through having other investigations, such as a CT scan on the chest for lung issues.
People with a fatty liver may experience more weakness, tiredness and fatigue than average. They might also experience a pain or a fullness in the abdomen towards the right and center. Some patients have showed an increase in pain in the joints associated with NAFLD. In terms of blood tests, these would show up as elevated levels of AST and ALT (the enzymes in the liver) as well as increased triglyceride and insulin levels.
If a fatty liver progresses to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis there will be an increase in the severity of the symptoms such as vomiting and nausea, appetite loss, an increase in the severity of soreness in the abdomen and a yellowing of the skin and eyes.
It’s vitally important that anyone who has been diagnosed with a fatty liver sees their physician regularly so that the condition is monitored and can hopefully be reversed before it progresses to NASH.
How to Get Rid of a Fatty Liver?
Primarily, to address an unhealthy liver, you should concentrate on the possible causes of the disease. This would include managing and controlling your weight and changing your diet. This can be done easily by changing the foods that you eat and taking up increased exercise. Losing weight will address the cause of the fatty liver in many people.
A diet that includes fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains will help fight off fatty liver. In terms of exercise, you should try to have 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. For those who are just starting out, this can be as little as walking to the store instead of driving. Plant-based diets can also help control the fats around and in the liver. This will help to keep triglycerides and cholesterol levels in check.
Of course, you should also limit other things that will have an adverse effect on your liver, such as drinking alcohol. Of course, you should also consult your doctor before taking any medications, especially those over the counter as they are processed by the liver and you would not want to put your liver under any undue or unnecessary stresses.
Interestingly, coffee and some liver detoxifying juice has shown to reduce the damage to the livers of people who have been diagnosed with fatty liver conditions. However, it’s not clear how or why people who drink coffee have reduced symptoms of the disease.
There have been many studies that have shown that certain herbs, vitamins and other ingredients in supplements can reduce the fat in the liver and decrease the progression and risk of liver diseases. However, there does need to be more research into this too. Of course, it is important to speak to your physician before you take any supplements too as the liver is where many supplements and substances are broken down.
For example, Vitamin E is an antioxidant which could help to protect the liver through the reduction of the damage caused by any inflammation. However, as mentioned, more research is needed into this theory too. Some studies do suggest a correlation between vitamin E and an improvement in NAFLD but vitamin E does have associations with an increased risk of other conditions, such as prostate cancer in men.
Benefits of Liver Supplements:
There are multiple benefits of taking a liver supplement, particularly for the early and reversible stages of fatty liver disease. The ingredients in supplements vary but the more common ingredients below have distinct advantages.
Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric and it has a huge list of benefits (read our detailed information on curcumin turmeric supplements). It improves heart health and benefits aging. However, recent research has found that it also protects the cells in the liver from damage as occurs in fatty liver disease and other related conditions.
Milk Thistle is a common ingredient in fatty liver supplements and is one of the best-known herbs for liver issues. Milk Thistle is in the aster plant family and it has been used for centuries in the treatment of many health-related problems. In trials involving the milk thistle active ingredient silymarin, the results showed that the herb repairs liver damage and rejuvenates the liver cells too.
Vitamin E: Vitamin E and other vitamins are quite helpful to your liver’s health. Vitamin E reduces and stops the damage to the membranes of the cells. The chemical name for Vitamin E is d-alpha-tocopherol and this is Vitamin E in its natural form which is much more effective than the synthetic form d1-alpha-tocopherol.
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a lecithin extract which helps the cells in the liver to regenerate.
Selenium is an important antioxidant which can help keep the liver healthy. It can ensure that the liver cells are protected and can improve the elasticity in the tissues, which is important for the health of the liver.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids are also antioxidants and help with inflammation. People who are lower in omega-3 are more prone to fatty liver disease and, as such, it can help in the treatment of the early stages of fatty liver disease. It’s also associated with improving the sensitivity to insulin, which is linked to one of the causes of NAFLD. Some research has shown that long-term use of Omega-3 Fatty Acids improves the appearance of the liver as well as the blood flow.
Probiotics aid the digestive tract and help to balance gut bacteria. Probiotic nutritional supplements can prevent fat accumulation in the liver.
In looking at these separate supplements and ingredients, a good fatty liver supplement will aim to address the issues of the fatty liver disease and offer some of the benefits listed above. Of course, not all supplements will have all of the advantages and so it’s important to choose a supplement that is right for you.
Natural Sources and Daily Intake
There are many natural sources of the above ingredients that are often put in supplements. In addition to taking a supplement, or instead of, you can try to improve your fatty liver by improving your diet (as was mentioned above as one of the effective early treatments of the condition). Your diet should include a wide variety of foods. To begin with, you should reduce calories and eat a high fiber diet. If you eat more foods that have complex carbs, protein, and fiber it will help you feel fuller and will prevent you from over-eating or eating additional calories. Some people with NAFLD decide to follow a specific diet such as the Mediterranean diet.
Let’s have a look at some foods that can help.
Garlic has many benefits for fatty liver disease. One study, published in the Advanced Biomedical Research, has found that garlic can reduce body fat and body weight in those with NAFLD.
Foods rich in Omega-3
There are many foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, salmon and flaxseeds.
As we have mentioned above, coffee has been shown to have some advantages in the reduction of fatty liver disease. It could be due to its chlorogenic acid content. This is a compound that’s known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Of course, if you don’t already drink coffee, then it wouldn’t be wise to start drinking lots of it straight away!
Of course, eating vegetables is all part of the healthy diet that you should be embarking on if you suffer from NAFLD. But broccoli also has additional benefits and so should definitely be a vegetable that you include in your diet. One piece of research found that broccoli helps to prevent a build-up of liver fat. This research was carried out on mice but the early indications and evidence show that it is very promising for humans too.
Aside from coffee, tea has been a medicinal drink for many people for thousands of years. Green tea is famous for its antioxidant benefits and can help to reduce the percentage of fat in the blood and the overall percentage of body fat.
Walnuts, as mentioned, are high in omega-3 fatty acids. A 2015 report showed that liver function was improved after eating walnuts in people who have NAFLD.
Avocados are naturally rich in healthy fats and contain nutrients that are anti-inflammatory as well as fiber. This can help to reduce the oxidative stress that occurs in the body as well as reducing blood sugar levels associated with fatty liver disease.
Whey protein and Soy
Some proteins help to protect the body from FLD. Whey and Soy proteins can help to balance carbohydrate intake as well as reducing blood sugar. Additionally, weight can be reduced and muscle retained through the consumption of soy and whey proteins.
Liver Supplement Side Effects
This is always the question that most people want the answer to: does taking supplements for fatty liver have any side effects? The answer is that it depends on the individual. However, there are some general side effects of which you should be aware. It’s also worth remembering that some minor side effects have to be justified if you want to experience the benefit of a product, i.e. if the benefits outweigh the side effects.
Given that most supplements for fatty liver contain milk thistle, it’s worth looking at its side effects. Usually, there are few side effects with milk thistle. Studies have shown that it is safe to take for a long time, even as long as up to 41 months. It can cause diarrhea and, more rarely, bloating, nausea, gas and an upset stomach. Other rarer symptoms, aside from troublesome intestines, are headaches and loss of appetite.
Of course, as with any supplement, there are some special precautions. You should not take this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is not because it has been deemed to be unsafe, but simply because there has not been enough reliable information to say that it is definitely safe. So, to be 100% on the safe side, it is best not to take it.
Also, if you are allergic to any related plants, you should take caution with the particular product. The family of plants is the asteraceae/compositae plant family such as chrysanthemum, marigolds, ragweed, daisies as well as others. It’s best to check with your doctor first if you do have allergies of any kind.
There’s also some evidence that milk thistle can act like estrogen. So it’s probably best avoided if you have any conditions related to estrogen, such as some cancers (breast, ovarian and uterine specifically) and also conditions such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids. The milk thistle could make such conditions worse.
As milk thistle works on the liver, it might cause interactions with other medications and this is why you should consult your doctor before you begin taking it if you already take some medication. As some meds are broken down and changed in the liver, the milk thistle might make the medications be broken down too quickly. It could also enhance some side effects.
There’s also the advice that you should avoid milk thistle if you are diabetic as it can interfere with your body’s blood sugar levels and then cause problems for diabetics.
In sum, if you are otherwise healthy and are confident in managing your supplements then there is no reason why you should not begin or continue to take them. You can even prepare super effective liver cleaning juice at home with very little effort. If you are in any doubt about whether you should, either because you have an underlying medical condition or because you take other medications, then we would advise you to contact your doctor before you take these supplements. The last thing that we want, here at Supplemania, is to cause any problems with our readers’ health.
How We Picked and Tested
Of the many different fatty liver supplements on the market today, we have managed to narrow it down to just ten to help you choose the best one for you. In order to do this, we have gone through around 12,000 user reviews of different products so that we could determine what the important features of fatty liver supplements are and what users look for when choosing a supplement. Despite all products having some side effects, we have tested and then selected only those products which had the least number of side effects in order to be of the most benefit and least disruption to our readers.
In total, we analyzed around 40 different products, all with different features and styles. We shortlisted 20 of them from the initial research product list and visited their websites and product guidebooks. Additionally, we looked through their descriptions on store pages as well as individual critic reviews to look at their unique features. We analyzed the products by doing side-by-side comparisons of their features and their supposed benefits.
We then compared the final reviews of our volunteer researchers and matched them with the research data that we had collected. Finally, with all of this data in hand, we selected the best ten products to present to you in our report. If you would like to see a detailed breakdown of all this data then it is available to view. Some side effects need to be justified in order to have the benefit of the supplements and our volunteers found that not all of the ingredients are suitable for everyone. Also, there may be adverse effects if you take more of the supplement than the recommended dosage. All of the dosage instructions, as well as the side effects, are clearly mentioned in the product’s safety information.

No. 7: Blue Ice Fermented Skate Liver Oil (120 Capsules)
Green Pastures is a company that’s a family business based in Nebraska. In 2003 they decided to dedicate the land of their dairy farm into making “high-vitamin butter oil” and their foray into vitamins and supplements stemmed from there.
