Turmeric contains curcumin which is a substance that has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is a leading contributory factor in many of the common diseases in the west. Curcumin has the ability to inhibit many of the molecules in the body which play a part in inflammation. It also has strong antioxidant properties by neutralizing free radicals by itself as well as stimulating the body’s natural antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, when taken with the right diet, it boosts certain hormones in the brain (such as BDNF) and this increases the development of neurons thereby helping fight against degeneration in the brain.
Another reported effect is its role in helping against heart disease. It does this through improving the function of the endothelium (the cells that line the interior of blood vessels). There’s even the possibility that curcumin can help fight cancer due to molecular changes that it makes! As well as this, studies report that it has been just as effective in treating people with depression as the well-prescribed drug Prozac! You can see why it has become a popular choice as an anti-aging and all-round better health supplement! Now you just have to let us help you decide the best turmeric supplement for you!

Precautions for Turmeric Supplements
Of course, with any supplement, care should be taken when using it, making sure that it is safe for you to use and that you are also using it safely too. You should consider extracts and the classes of solvents that are used to extract botanical compounds such as turmeric. Responsible manufacturers use safe solvents but it must be noted that not all solvents are the same. They are graded on their toxicity potential. A “Class 1” solvent means that it contains known human carcinogens, or those suspected to be carcinogens. As such, these solvents should be avoided in all pharmaceutical manufacturing (Carbon tetrachloride and Benzene are two such examples of Class 1 solvents).
Class 2 solvents are toxic by nature and are best avoided completely or used only in extremely limited circumstances. These include chlorobenzene, trichloroethylene, and hexane. The final class of solvents, Class 3, are the safest and mildest and do not pose a threat or risk to human health. These include acetic acid (often known as vinegar, its diluted form), ethanol (alcohol) and water, of course! Water is effectively the solvent you use every day to make your own extracts already – think about your everyday tea or coffee!
There are many potential serious risks with Class 1 or 2 solvents. These can lead to kidney failure, brain damage and even cancer. The issue is that the residues of solvents can be left remaining in foods, pharmaceutical products, and supplements. It is essential that you are cautious about the types of products and the dosage you use as well as thinking about other medications that you take.
There are some risks with taking turmeric. As it has low bioavailability it is burned quickly by your metabolism and therefore you are not able to absorb much. You should also know how much turmeric your body can take and what happens if you take more. If you are taking other medications it is important that you consult your doctor before you take turmeric supplements.
Rather superficially, it leaves a yellow tinged stain on the skin after applying. It could cause irritation, swelling or redness if you have a turmeric allergy. As a result, you should do a test patch on your forearm to see how you react before using turmeric on your face. If you have previously shown an allergy to turmeric through food consumption then it goes without saying that you should avoid turmeric supplements and related products too.
How are Turmeric Supplements Made?
Curcumin is made from the turmeric rhizomes (curcuma longa) and is a part of the ginger family.
The root of the turmeric plant is called the rhizome and it is a brown-yellow color on the outside with an orange color inside. These rhizomes grow to be about one inch in length. When it is dried and ground into a powder it becomes bright yellow in color. Turmeric is grown in tropical, hot climates and in light soil. India is the largest producer of turmeric with around 100,000 acres of land, harvesting about 100,000 tons of the stuff per season. The curcumin content of the turmeric root depends on the soil quality and farming techniques as well as the local climate. Some root has about 2 to 5% curcumin content while others have 6 to 8%.
All of our shortlisted turmeric curcumin supplements, which appear below this article, have been found to have been made using curcumin that has been grown organically. Sustainable methods also ensure that the quality of the crops is improved. Such sustainable methods use natural fertilizers, such as animal manure, and burning the leaves after harvesting the turmeric and using the ash as an additional fertilizer. The plants are given careful attention and they are irrigated regularly and optimally. After the turmeric has been harvested, it is processed in the stages outlined as follows.
Firstly, it is washed to remove any remaining soil. The roots are removed and the fingers and the mothers are then separated. Next the rhizomes are cured. They are boiled in water until they become soft before they are dried out. This removes the odor of the raw rhizomes and reduces the drying time and ensures that the product is colored uniformly.
Drying: The cured rhizomes are then dried in the sun in the drying yard. It continues to be dried until it loses mass and reaches a constant weight. The best drying temperature is 37°C (98.6°F). This process takes between 10 to 16 days until the rhizomes are completely dry. There is also an artificial way of drying the rhizomes. This drying process is assisted by using hot cross-flow air at a maximum temperature of 60°C (140°F). Clean surfaces are used for the drying process to ensure that there is no contamination from any extraneous matter. If the product is dried artificially the product retains a much brighter color than if it is dried by sunlight.
Polishing: After the turmeric is dry it is rougher in appearance and duller in color and so it is polished to remove the roughness on the surfaces. This removes the surface scale, soil particles, and small rootlets. Some turmeric is polished manually by rubbing the rhizomes on a hard surface. Another method is mechanical whereby there are polishing drums. These are operated by hand or mechanically and the rotation process causes the rhizomes to rub against each other producing a polished finish.
Coloring: Sometimes the dried rhizomes are coated with powdered turmeric during the polishing process in one of two ways: dry coloring and wet coloring. In the dry coloring process, turmeric powder is added to the polishing process for the last 10 minutes of polishing. In wet coloring, the turmeric powder is mixed with a little water and is sprayed over the rhizomes in the final few moments of the polishing process. The polished fingers are then graded by separating fingers, splits, and bulbs.
Turmeric Powder: For turmeric powder, the turmeric rhizomes are ground, either mechanically or by hand, into the required size. The powder is then packed in many different container types, some ensuring that the color remains for around 6 months.
For curcumin extracts in supplements, it is normal to have 95% curcuminoids in a supplement product. Despite the high quantity of the curcumin extracted from the turmeric, the body cannot always absorb it well. This is one of the elements which concerns researchers as they want to ensure the maximum benefit in therapeutic use. As a result, researchers try to boost the absorption of curcumin in many ways.
Blending with Piperine: Piperine is a compound that is found in black pepper (of the Latin name Piper nigrum). It is what makes it pungent and therefore easily absorbed. However, it can interfere with other frequently prescribed medication. If you are using this blend for long-term use, you should consult a doctor first.
Another blend is with Phosphatidylcholine which ensures that the curcumin is transported safely. However, it may not always have a longer blood retention time which is needed for therapeutic uses.
Turmeric can also be micronized and blended with turmeric oil. Micronizing is when you take a standardized small particle of curcumin and blend it with turmeric oil. This shows an excellent blood retention time and absorption rate yet this is an expensive process and therefore is reflected in its price.
A further method is by using nanotechnology. This is a new method which may provide higher levels of absorption. However, it has not been thoroughly tested in humans and therefore its safety is still relatively unknown. Regardless, research is still going on regarding curcumin nanomedicine’s role in treating cancer.

Foreword and Disclaimer
It is worth noting that dietary supplements come in many forms which we add to our nutrition from food and drink in order to support good health. They are not prescribed medications and they should also not be considered as an alternative to or substitute for food. There are many dietary supplements available and some commons ones are:
- Amino Acids
- Whey Proteins
- Green Tea
- Calcium, and of course
Each supplement has clearly stated on the leaflet or packaging any possible side effects. Of course, you have to justify some of the side effects that our volunteers experienced and evidently not all types of ingredients in supplements are suitable for all of our volunteers. Also, it could have an effect on you if you take more than the recommended dosage too. The product’s safety information most certainly includes the possible side-effects and dosage so you should ensure that you read each one properly.
There are also legal disclaimers on packaging too which are to cover the manufacturer in certain potentially riskier situations, for example:
Consult your physician before you use this product if you’re pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or suffering from a medical condition. Don’t use if the seal is found to be broken. Keep this product and all the other supplements away from the reach of children. Allergen warning: This product has been produced in a place/facility where ingredients containing eggs, milk, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts, fish, and peanuts are also processed.
Warnings & Side Effects
There are some general warnings that you should take notice of before considering buying a turmeric supplement.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Turmeric is most likely SAFE when taken orally in amounts frequently found in food during breastfeeding and in pregnancy. However, it is likely to be UNSAFE when taken in medicinal amounts. It could bring on a menstrual period or stimulate the uterus, both of which could put the pregnancy at risk. So, it is wiser to be cautious and not to take turmeric in medicinal amounts if you are pregnant. Likewise, it is safer not to use medicinal amounts of turmeric if you are breastfeeding as there is not enough detailed information about its safety.
If you have an existing gallbladder problem, turmeric can exacerbate it. You should not use turmeric supplements if you have a bile duct problem or obstruction or if you have gallstones.
Turmeric can slow down the blood clotting progress which could increase the risk of bleeding and bruising if you have a hematological or bleeding disorder.
Blood sugar can be affected by curcumin, the main chemical compound in turmeric. It should, therefore, be used with caution if you have diabetes as it can make you hypoglycemic.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
If you have this stomach disorder the turmeric could upset your stomach and exacerbate the symptoms of the disease. If your GERD symptoms do get worse then you should stop taking turmeric supplements.
If you are suffering from conditions such as uterine, breast or ovarian cancers, endometriosis or fibroids then turmeric’s chemical curcumin can act a bit like estrogen and therefore it could make some hormone-sensitive conditions get worse. However, some research suggests that turmeric can reduce the effect of estrogen in hormone-sensitive cancer cells and it could, therefore, have some beneficial effects for suffers of the disease. Until we know more information about this aspect, turmeric supplement use should be done with caution if you have a hormone-receptive condition.
Turmeric supplements can decrease sperm movement if the supplements are taken orally by men, which could impact on fertility. If you are thinking of trying to conceive then you should use turmeric supplements with caution. However, turmeric is actually known to be helpful in boosting testosterone for men.
Turmeric can impact on the absorption of iron and taking high amounts could prove problematic for people who suffer from iron deficiency. Please take with caution if you suffer from anemia or other iron-related problems.
As turmeric can slow the clotting processes of the blood it could cause excess bleeding during surgical procedures and operations. You should stop taking turmeric with a minimum of a two-week gap before any scheduled operations.

Desmethoxycurcumin is one of three curcuminoids which are found in turmeric.
Bisdemethoxycurcumin is one of the other three curcuminoids which are present in turmeric (Curcuma longa). All of these curcuminoids have been found to have specific properties, such as antioxidant properties. Bisdemethoxycurcumin has shown itself to be even more resistant than the other curcuminoids to alkaline degradation. This curcuminoid is also used like a pigment and also as nutraceutical due to its anti-mutagenic properties.
This is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG). To put it more simply it’s a chain of alternating sugars which are usually found attached to different proteins. It is an important component of cartilage structure and provides a lot of the resistance to compression. It is now widely used in different supplements to treat osteoarthritis among other medical conditions.
Astragalus comes from a plant in the Fabaceae family. Traditional Chinese medicine uses this herb among 50 other fundamental herbs.
One thing that may be confusing some of our readers is what the difference is between curcumin and turmeric! Simply speaking, the two are frequently mentioned together due to the fact that curcumin is the ingredient that is derived from the turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma longa). As turmeric has been used for so many years as a culinary spice and herbal tonic, researches have delved into what it is exactly that makes turmeric so good for us. They learned that turmeric contains curcumin, one of the most important health-promoting components. There’s a carotenoid pigment in turmeric that gives turmeric its bright yellow color and it is this component that has strong antioxidant properties. There are also two further related compounds that are found in turmeric. These are desmethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. All three together are known as curcuminoids.
People often wonder if curcumin is better than the turmeric itself. Many experts believe that we really should get most of our nutrients from nature itself, the way that human beings were intended to, from whole foods. Other nutrients in the foods also play a part in how the nutrients are processed and how we benefit from eating them. It’s the same thing as the explanation that you should not peel fruits before eating them as the skins contain many nutrients too.
However, if your diet is lacking then this is where supplements come in. Turmeric roots only contain about 3% curcumin and this has to be extracted via a method called chromatography. This separates each of the curcuminoids allowing us to isolate the curcumin. Turmeric extract, therefore, contains the highest concentration of curcumin, up to 95%. Research has shown that the extracted curcumin has increased antioxidants in comparison with normal turmeric powder alone. The other two curcuminoids also show that they work to combat antioxidants too. This why turmeric curcumin supplements contain the extract rather than just turmeric itself.
